HVA 1831 NCCER HVAC Level 2A

This course covers alternating current, compressors, and refrigerants and oils, leak detection, evacuation, and recovery, metering devices, and heat pumps. One classroom, two lab hours per week.

Prerequisites: Approval of Department

Course Outcomes
  • Understand operating principles, applications, installation and adjustment of fixed and adjustable expansion devices used in air conditioning equipment
  • Understand operating principles of compressors used in comfort air conditioning and refrigeration systems
  • Understand characteristics and applications of pure and blended refrigerants and lubricating oils used in refrigeration systems
  • Handle refrigerant safely and understand equipment servicing procedures for HVAC equipment in an environmentally safe manner
  • Understand transformers, single and three-phase power distribution, capacitors, theory and operation of induction motors, and the instruments and techniques used in testing AC circuits and components
  • Understand principles of reverse cycle heating and the operation of heat pumps. Analyze heat pump control circuits and install and service heat pumps
