A chronological survey of major writers of American poetry, drama and prose from the Colonial Period through the Civil War (through 1865).

  • Recognize and explain interaction between literature and various cultural domains such as social, political, and economic.
  • Relate literature to the historical period about which or in which it is written.
  • Assess the validity of diverse literary interpretations.
  • Analyze literary texts and demonstrate critical thinking through interpretation of the texts.
