MHT 2239 Dual Diagnosis

Treatment of persons with substance use disorders and mental illness. Unique challenges and effective treatment models for client population are explored. Stages of Change and Motivational Interviewing. Community and support resources.

Prerequisites: MHT 1130

Course Outcomes
  • Identify and describe treatment models for clients with co-occuring disorders. Explain why traditional addiction and mental health treatment approaches are unsuccessful with persons with co-occurring disorders.
  • Identify mental illnesses most commonly coexisting with substance use disorders.
  • Describe how co-occurring substance use disorders and mental illness exacerbate each other.
  • Identify support and community resources for persons with co-occurring disorders.
