NSG 1400 Health & Illness I: Foundational Concepts in Nursing

Introduces program and foundational nursing concepts and nursing process. Utilizes knowledge from general education courses to assist students to plan and implement nursing care of individuals across the lifespan. Develops communication, assessment and basic psychomotor skills. Total clock hours for theory: 37.5; Total planned clinical hours: 56.25; total planned lab hours: 93.75; Clinical and lab hours combined: 150 hours.

Prerequisites: ALH 1101 and BIO 1141 and ENG 1101 and MAT 1130 and NSG 1200

Course Outcomes
  • Use technology to support patient-centered nursing care.
  • Demonstrate basic health assessment, communication techniques, and psychomotor skills in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Differentiate normal vs. abnormal health assessment findings to determine individual needs.
  • Utilize diagnostic reasoning to identify pertinent health care needs for individuals across the lifespan.
  • Provide evidence-based interventions to meet basic health care needs for individuals across the lifespan.
  • Demonstrate caring professional behaviors within a legal and ethical framework in a variety of health care settings.
