OTA 2412 Occupational Therapy Assistant & Pediatrics

Effect of the features of major diseases, injuries, and disorders that affect pediatric population's occupational performance. Pediatric Function and Dysfunction theories, models of practice, frames of reference that provide the foundation of Occupational Therapy. Screening and evaluation of occupational performance affected by dysfunction in the pediatric population. Includes use of occupations for the purpose of assessment, specified screening tools, assessments, observation, checklists, histories and interviews with clients and/or their family members or caregivers. Pediatric medical and educational practice settings.

Prerequisites: OTA 1313

Course Outcomes
  • Demonstrate ability to articulate role of the occupational therapy assistant in screening and evaluation process and the importance of and rationale for supervision and collaboration between the occupational therapist and the occupational therapy assistant in that process.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of global social issues and prevailing health and welfare needs of pediatric populations with or at risk for disabilities and chronic health conditions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to assist with the development of occupation-based, culturally relevant, intervention plans and strategies for infants, children or adolescents.
  • Understand the effects of heritable diseases, genetic conditions, disability, trauma and injury to the health and occupational performance of the infant, child or adolescent.
